A new feature announced for Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is the ability to be able to design the villagers' homes. The game was also confirmed to be the first to support amiibo in card format, to be released alongside the game.

Animal Crossing series director Aya Kyogoku designed connectivity between Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival in that houses associated with amiibo characters in the former could be inserted into the board game of the latter. Eight series character amiibo were planned for release with Amiibo Festival.
